House Rules

Dear visitors,
welcome to the Kunstgebäude. Here, you can view original works of art across more than 1,100 square metres of exhibition space. In order to ensure the safety of the artworks, we kindly ask you to observe the rules set out in our house regulations.

Authority over the premises lies with the building operator as well as with the persons responsible for exhibitions and any temporary organisers. Our guests are required to follow the instructions of the staff on site. By entering the Kunstgebäude, you acknowledge and accept the respective house rules.

Admission Fees, Opening Hours and Closures

Admission fees, opening hours and closing times are subject to change. The current applicable version can be viewed at the ticket desk.

The operator and the property owner reserve the right to close the venue in special circumstances. Such closures may affect the entire building, specific areas or individual rooms, and may also include the removal of individual artworks from display. There is no legal entitlement to access, even if admission has already been paid.

Special circumstances include, but are not limited to:

  • overcrowding
  • construction work
  • conservation measures
  • staff shortages in the security area, among other reasons

Pets

As a general rule, animals of any kind are not permitted. The only exception applies to assistance dogs required to ensure barrier-free access to the Kunstgebäude.

Smoking, Food and Beverages

Smoking is prohibited throughout the entire building. Eating and drinking are only permitted in the designated areas. They are strictly prohibited in the exhibition rooms.

Prohibition of Cannabis Consumption in and around the Kunstgebäude Building

On 1 April 2024, the Cannabis Act came into force in Germany. As a result, the possession and cultivation of cannabis are legal for adults in Germany under certain conditions. However, the consumption of cannabis is prohibited in and within the vicinity of schools, daycare centres, playgrounds, other facilities for children and young people, and public sports grounds, provided these are within sight (which generally corresponds to a radius of at least 100 metres from the entrance area).

Consumption in the immediate presence of minors is also prohibited. The Kunstgebäude Stuttgart is located within the above-mentioned radius of such protected areas (schoolyard and playground). In addition, as an art museum with an educational mission, it welcomes minors on a daily basis. For this reason, the consumption of cannabis is not permitted in or around the building.

Bulky Items, Bags, Coats and Umbrellas

The bringing of large bags, luggage, bulky or sharp-edged objects, tripods or sticks is prohibited, as is entering the exhibition rooms with jackets, coats, wet clothing, umbrellas or similar items.

Pushchairs are only permitted for babies. Walking frames and wheelchairs are permitted. However, users are required to exercise particular care in the exhibition rooms. Instructions given by the supervisory staff in the exhibition rooms must be followed.

The maximum permitted bag size is displayed in the ticketing area. All other items must be stored in a locker.

Lockers

The lockers in the basement may only be used for the duration of your visit to the Kunstgebäude. They are emptied in the evening. We accept no liability for the contents left inside.

If you lose the key to your locker, an administrative fee of EUR 30.00 will be charged and must be paid on site without delay. This fee is required to cover the replacement of the lock.

Conduct in the Exhibition Rooms

In order to ensure the safety of the artworks, it is prohibited to approach them too closely or to touch them. Any protective barriers must be observed.

Eating and drinking are not permitted in the exhibition rooms. The use of felt-tip pens, fountain pens, ballpoint pens or similar items is also prohibited. Laser pointers may not be used under any circumstances.

When handling notepads, drawing materials, catalogues, glasses or folding stools, please always ensure that an appropriate safety distance from the artworks is maintained (see section “Liability”).

Families, Children and Teenagers, School Groups

Children under the age of 6 may only enter the exhibition rooms when accompanied by an adult.

Parents and accompanying adults are responsible for the behaviour of children and young people and assume liability for them. In the case of school groups, the duty of supervision rests with the accompanying teachers.

Instructions given by the supervisory staff must be followed.

Photography and Filming

Photography and filming for private use are permitted in the exhibition rooms. Any exceptions are indicated accordingly.

The use of tripods and flash is prohibited. When taking photographs or filming, the personal rights of third parties (in particular other visitors) must always be respected.

Please note that the publication of photographs featuring artworks on social media (including private accounts) or in other publications may be subject to image rights. This applies to all works by artists who have not been deceased for more than 70 years. In Germany, these image rights are administered by VG Bild-Kunst in Bonn.

Commercial photography and filming must be officially registered with the operators of the Kunstgebäude at least three working days in advance.
